John,
You’ve heard from me about the importance of the For the People Act--a once-in-a-generation opportunity to empower voters and make our elections more accessible, meaningful, and secure. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment for voting rights around the country so we want to share with you some amazing voting rights events happening in the coming weeks.
60 years ago, the original Freedom Riders fought for the soul of America with the notion that everyone deserves to be treated equally, regardless of race or other physical or ideological identifiers.
Today, with our democracy threatened by Jim Crow-era legislation to dismantle Black and Brown voting power, we’re riding for the soul of America again. We’re so excited to support Black Voters Matter and our partners who are travelling through the South to connect directly with Black voters to encourage them to understand their power and calling them to take it to the polls and streets as a time-honored means to protect that power.
RSVP to join them at one of their stops!
The Black Voters Matter Fund will kick off their tour in Georgia and end in Washington, D.C., making stops in key southern states along the way to rally with partner organizations, meet with voters, and discuss the issues impacting our communities.
Freedom Rides for Voting Rights, which continues the tradition of the original Freedom Rides, comes as states around the country consider legislation to restrict voting rights, disproportionately impacting Black communities.
In addition to voter outreach and engagement, the bus tour will raise awareness about these Jim Crow-era voter suppression bills and tell voters how they can fight back.
I hope that you can join the Freedom Rides for Voting Rights tour at one of their scheduled stops in the coming weeks!
Thanks for all you do,
Christine Bass, For the People Act Organizer
