Dear John,
How are you?
I know that many of us are wrestling with grief, trauma, and exhaustion. Deona Marie should have celebrated her 32nd birthday on Wednesday. Winston Smith should be with his family. They both deserved long lives with their children and loved ones.

It can feel hard to wade through our sadness and rage to make sense of any of this. Murder and state-sanctioned violence are senseless acts of cruelty, and sometimes I don’t feel clear about anything except the deception and violence our communities have been forced to endure.
But I also feel clear that we need space to hold each other and heal. We have a right to protest, dissent, and grieve together in public. Over and over, law enforcement is weaponized against us as some elected officials continue to choose to violently protect profits and power instead of the people they claim to serve.
From Minneapolis to the fight to stop Line 3 in Northern Minnesota, we have power in our solidarity and care for each other. We have power in our clarity, because we’re the ones telling the truth. So much is at stake – and so much is possible – in our local elections this fall. Learn about the charter amendments that will be on the ballot and the incredible slate of candidates running for city council.
