Nearly four years ago, the Trump administration made the unprecedented move of drastically shrinking Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments. It was the largest attack on public lands in American history and a direct attack on sacred lands and tribal sovereignty. I spent years putting together guided backpacking trips into this amazing landscape and I can tell you it is one of the most important cultural landscapes on Earth. If any place deserves to be a national monument, Bears Ears does. It’s past time we restore protections and begin to repair this damage. And now we have ample opportunity to do just that. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland just recommended that President Biden expand the boundaries at our Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments. This would be a huge step forward — preserving millions of acres of federal land for generations to come.
Our public lands are meant for the public — not to be tampered with and sold to the highest bidder. I will always fight to protect them. Thank you for speaking out along with me. — Martin |
