Dear Friend,
Today the U.S. Supreme Court finally issued its opinion in the Fulton v Philadelphia case, the effects of which could profoundly impact protections for nontheists, LGBTQ+ people, and other minorities. It also could have substantial consequences for the separation of religion and government.
On the surface, the 9-0 decision allows a religious foster care agency to get away with ignoring nondiscrimination protections, while expanding religious exemptions and endangering the civil rights of everyone. Even though this decision is narrow in scope, it is nonetheless incredibly disappointing and immensely concerning. The Secular Coalition for America (SCA) remains vigilant to all the ways religion is used to inflict harm upon others and gain a privileged status in our secular pluralist democracy.
Here are statements and legal analyses from some of our member organizations: American Atheists, the American Humanist Association, Center for Inquiry, and the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
To learn more about the consequences of this decision and what you can do to help defend the rights of your fellow Americans please join us for three online events.
The first two events are tonight; a Virtual Rally, followed by a Town Hall. Join the Rally here at 7pm ET where we’ll gather together as a broad community, hear from amazing speakers and watch outstanding performers. Also RSVP for the login to the Town Hall which will feature experts providing analysis of the opinion, how it will affect our lives, and what still needs to be done. These events are made possible by the #DecisionDay coalition and are co-sponsored by SCA.
