Right-Wing Recall Targets Hurtado

Kingsburg City Council Member Jewel Hurtado of Kingsburg is now facing a recall effort from the radical right. The Fresno County Democratic party stands in support of Hurtado against this partisan scheme that is attempting to piggyback on the statewide recall attack on Governor Gavin Newsom.

The recently posted Kingsburg recall notice accuses Hurtado of demonstrating “a Marxist/socialist agenda in her activities and actions.” The recall notice comes shortly after Hurtado sponsored a proposal to fly the Pride flag at Kingsburg City Hall during Pride month (June). Unfortunately, that measure was defeated, unlike a subsequent proposal that passed the Fresno City Council.

The process to initiate the recall election could take 7–9 months. As that time line would not result in the recall being on the ballot of a regularly scheduled election date, the election could cost Kingsburg $80,000 or more.

California Democrats Fight the Recall

California democrats face the biggest threat in years from the GOP. The Republican National Committee, wealthy Trump donors and right-wing extremists have joined forces in an attempt to recall Governor Gavin Newsom.

The California Democratic Party (CADEM) is playing a critical grassroots organizing role in the anti-recall effort. As a part of the effort, CADEM will launch an organizing effort to Stop the Republican Recall on June 15 from 6 – 7 p.m. We’ll use this time to learn more about the recall effort against Governor Gavin Newsom and how we’ll work together over the next few months to fight back against the right-wing Republican recall attempt.

California’s Economy Grows
Providing Funds for Progress

To judge by much of the national news, California has been doomed to imminent failure for the past 20 years, if not longer. Then when Covid hit, many of even the most confident Californians were ready to agree that the time foretold had come. But instead of a devastated economy necessitating drastic cuts to the state’s progressive agenda, statewide GDP has soared and the budget has its largest ever surplus.

California has one-eighth of the entire U.S. population and still provides a disproportionate share of the nation’s GDP. Despite rumors that the state is suffering an exodus of rich people and manufacturing, both those have increased.

Job growth has rebounded faster than Texas or New York, while the overall state economy increased more than those of both Texas and New York combined. Despite Texas’s tax haven economy that has been nabbing editorial headlines, California manufacturing increased more than any other state.

The first ever year-on-year drop in population, which cost us a seat in the House of Representatives, is about the same number of people estimated to have moved to California from other countries if Trump had not prevented new visas.

However, a significant percentage of these climbing numbers are contributed by big high value corporations and well-off individuals whose jobs were possible to homesource, as well as healthcare and manufacturing industries. For other Californians, we still need to do much more.

Our state derives 21% of our electricity from solar, but that number should be higher. Governor Newsom has announced the biggest state tax rebate in American history, but our benefits as Californians need to be things we can benefit from every day, not once in a windfall.

We’ve done the first part; we made it through the pandemic’s harshest days. Now we need to make sure what we build back is better than what we left behind.

Vaccine Month of Action

After more than a year of unspeakable loss and incredible resiliency, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Under President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ leadership, our nation is making progress against the Covid-19 pandemic. Today, California has one of the lowest coronavirus transmission levels in the country. Students are returning to classrooms. Weddings are resuming. We’re getting to hug our loved ones again.

But the truth is, we’ve got a long way to go to overcome this pandemic. Forty percent of U.S. adults have not yet gotten a vaccine. Many people continue to have questions about the vaccines or challenges getting vaccinated, especially in the communities hit hardest by the pandemic.

At the same time, communities of color continue to get vaccinated at lower rates than their White counterparts. That’s why California Democrats are joining forces with Made to Save in support of HHS’s National Vaccine Month of Action, which goes from June 5 to July 4.

When we rise together, there’s absolutely nothing we can’t accomplish.

Vaccinating as many U.S. adults as possible before July 4 will require everyone to pitch in—to make calls, send texts and talk to people face-to-face in our communities, answering questions and spreading the word about why it’s so important to get vaccinated.

Together, we can do this.
