The ACA Survives Its Latest Challenge, but Work Remains to Get More People Covered

In a 7-to-2 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court today threw out the latest challenge to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), leaving the law intact. The decision “further cements the law as a cornerstone of our health system,” say Sara Collins and Gabriella Aboulafia on To the Point.
Since its passage in 2010, the law has helped millions of people get health insurance — through the ACA marketplaces and an expansion of Medicaid eligibility, and by allowing more young people to stay on their parents’ insurance plans. It has also provided consumer protections, like ensuring that preexisting conditions are not excluded from coverage and that people are not charged higher premiums based on their age or gender.
In their post, Collins and Aboulafia highlight the ACA’s achievements while pointing out remaining areas of concern and potential improvements. Nearly 30 million adults and children in the U.S. remain uninsured, and 40 million have inadequate insurance coverage that leaves them at risk for expensive bills. The authors say it’s up to Congress to act now to help more Americans obtain affordable, comprehensive health insurance.
