Triple Shooting Leaves 1 Dead In Pico-Union Neighborhood Of L.A.
Police are investigating a triple shooting in the Pico-Union neighborhood of Los Angeles that left one person dead Wednesday night. The shooting was reported shortly before 10:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of West 17th Street, Los Angeles Police Department Officer William Cooper said. Investigators found three people had been shot in the incident. One shooting victim was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital, a Police Department spokesperson said. The two others wounded in the shooting were said to be hospitalized in critical but stable condition. All of the victims were described as adult males between 25 and 30 years old. No known motive for the shooting was announced and authorities did not provide a description of the gunman, or gunmen.

‘Never Thought It Would Be My Kid.’ LAPD Critic’s Son Is Killed In Drive-By Shooting
Late Tuesday night, William Gude took to his Twitter account @FilmThePoliceLA — which is usually dedicated to holding the LAPD and other area law enforcement accountable — in a sudden burst of personal grief. “My 22 year old son got shot,” he wrote. “I don’t think he made it.” Gude later confirmed the worst after getting a call from his son’s mother, who was sobbing, and connecting with a hospital social worker: His son, Marcelis Gude, was dead. Police said gunmen had rolled up to where Marcelis was standing, on the sidewalk at the mouth of an alley near the intersection of East 102nd and San Pedro streets in South Los Angeles, and opened fire. An 8-year-old girl riding her bicycle in the area was also struck and wounded, police said. She was taken to an area hospital and was stable, police said. “We must do better,” LAPD Chief Michel Moore tweeted about the shooting. On Wednesday morning, William Gude, who works in finance and lives in the Hollywood area, said he was still trying to wrap his head around what had occurred. For the last year, he has walked the streets of L.A. documenting crime scenes and police work, filing complaints about what he viewed as abuses by officers — often against young Black men like his son — and trying to intervene to help crime victims whenever possible. Now, his son was the victim. “One day I’m emailing Chief Moore over some complaints that they screwed up on, or I’m tweeting about him being upset about the charges being dropped [against protesters] in Echo Park, and the next day he’s tweeting about the murder of my son,” Gude said in an interview with The Times. “But you know what? He’s right. We need to do better,” Gude said. “I can’t blame the cops for this one.”

Police Investigating Fatal Stabbing At Park La Brea Apartments; Suspect In Custody
Los Angeles police Wednesday were investigating a fatal stabbing at the Park La Brea Apartment complex. According to authorities the stabbing happened at about 2:30 p.m. near the 300 block of Burnside Avenue. The victim, who has not been identified, died after being taken to a local hospital. Police said the suspect had been taken into custody and a knife was recovered at the scene. A motive for the deadly attack was not immediately disclosed, though officials said the incident was neither gang related nor domestic. It was not immediately known where the stabbing occurred and the investigation was ongoing.

2 Men Found Dead In Hollywood, Another Transported To Hospital
A death investigation is underway in Hollywood after two men were found dead and another was transported to the hospital Wednesday morning, the LAPD said. The three men were all discovered inside a vehicle, authorities confirmed. The bodies of the two deceased men were discovered shortly before 6 a.m. along De Longpre Avenue near McCadden Place, investigators said. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Another man was rushed to a nearby hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

LAPD Chief Moore: City Making Sure Homeless Encampments Don't Return To Echo Park Lake
The city is taking enforcement action to make sure homeless encampments don't return to Echo Park Lake after a massive clearing and cleaning project, LAPD Chief Michel Moore says. Earlier this year, the city cleared out hundreds of homeless individuals from the park around the lake to undertake a $1.1 million cleaning and refurbishing project. City workers removed nearly 40 tons of trash and debris, and hundreds of pounds of biological waste. The lake reopened to the public in May, with fencing around it that closes at night. Moore told Eyewitness News that Recreation and Parks, with LAPD assistance, is making sure the overnight tents don't return. "Now as it's opened back up, we see all of our communities that are having access to those public spaces. And we see Rec and Parks strictly enforcing no overnight camping," Moore said. "And that strict enforcement is a necessary ingredient as we move forward." "Our entire city has very limited open spaces and very limited park spaces. And those park spaces need to be available for everyone. And overnight camping is against the law." "These facilities are not meant to support that type of burden. And unless we design those facilities to handle that type of burden, we need to enforce it so that we can protect that ground for everyone's use."

Man Arrested For Allegedly Attacking 12-Year-Old Jewish Boy In Fairfax Area
A man is in custody for allegedly attacking a 12-year-old Jewish boy in the Fairfax area. Officers were sent to Melrose and Formosa avenues around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday and arrested Daniel Rankin, 50, on suspicion of battery, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. An ambulance was sent to the scene, but the boy was not taken to a hospital, the LAPD reported. Police released no other details of their investigation, but the Jewish Journal reported the victim was a Jewish child and cited tweets by lawyer and Los Angeles City Council candidate Sam Yebri, as well as Eve Barlow, who describes herself on her Twitter page as a Scottish-born journalist. "Today, on Melrose Ave (a few blocks from my own LA City Council campaign event tonight), an Orthodox Jewish child was punched in the face -- in the streets of Los Angeles -- in broad daylight,'' Yebri wrote. "Another unhinged person then walked by, defended the attacker, and threatened to `kill the kid's entire family.' This is not OK, cannot become the new normal in our city, and must end now.''

Man Killed In Compton Shooting
Authorities Wednesday identified a 30-year-old man who was killed in a shooting in Compton. Deputies from Compton station responded about 10:15 p.m. on June 8 to a shooting call in the 1700 block of East Alondra Boulevard and found Israel Miranda, who had sustained at least one gunshot wound to the upper body, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Miranda was pronounced dead at the scene by Compton Fire Department personnel. Details of what led to the shooting were not immediately available. Man Arrested For Shooting At Glendale Marketplace Parking Structure
A man who allegedly fired shots near the Glendale Marketplace in May was arrested this week, police reported. Officers responded to reports of shots fired around 5 p.m. on May 22 at the Glendale Marketplace parking structure located in the 100 block of Artsakh Avenue, the Glendale Police Department said Wednesday in a news release. “On arrival, officers determined multiple rounds had been fired at an adjacent occupied structure, however, no one had been struck,” the Police Department said in the release. Officers canvased the area and located several spent shell casings along with a discarded handgun. Ruben Garsevanyan, 28, of Glendale, was subsequently identified by detectives as the shooting suspect. Garsevanyan was located and arrested Monday by detectives assigned to the U.S. Marshals Task Force, police said.

Lynwood Man Convicted Of Stealing Painkillers In Robberies Of Southern California Pharmacies
A Lynwood man was found guilty Wednesday of federal robbery charges for organizing and leading a crew that committed 15 armed robberies of independent, mom-and-pop pharmacies across Southern California, with the intent of illegally selling the stolen prescription medication. Tyrome “Boobie” Lewis, 26, was found guilty of all eight felony charges he faced. Lewis has been in federal custody since his arrest in July 2019, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. In a ruling issued Wednesday, following a two-day bench trial that was held in April, U.S. District Judge John A. Kronstadt found Lewis guilty of one count each of conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery and conspiracy to distribute oxycodone, and two counts each of interference with commerce by robbery, possession with intent to distribute oxycodone and knowingly using and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.

Monica Lynne Leech of Camarillo was a mother of two whose 1997 murder absolutely stunned and saddened her co-workers and family. Her husband, Floyd Leech, often left the counter at the auto shop where he worked to sob in the back room. “We did pretty much everything together,” Floyd Leech told the Los Angeles Times the year after her death. “People don’t understand how big the hurt is.” Her funeral was attended by 400 people. She had been a teller for 20 years but had worked at Western Financial Bank in Thousand Oaks for only two months before a fatal robbery. She had transferred to the bank specifically because her friends and family convinced her it was a safer area than the one at her previous job in the Oxnard area. Her husband had purchased a car and a cellphone for her to make sure she would be safe. This month, authorities gave an update on the case, including how developments in DNA technology may finally help solve Leech’s slaying. A $30,000 reward is being offered for information.

Georgia Police Officer Shot And Killed After Traffic Stop; Suspect Dead
A police officer and a suspect were killed in a shooting that began with a traffic stop in north Georgia, authorities said early Thursday. The encounter between the Holly Springs officer and a male suspect began in Holly Springs, a small city about an hour’s drive northwest of Atlanta, according to a statement from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The statement offered no more details. “We are in the process of notifying the officer's family members and attempting a positive identification of the suspect,” Holly Springs police spokeswoman April Van Alstine said in a statement. “Please keep the Holly Springs Police Department (Georgia) in your thoughts and prayers as we mourn the loss of one of their officers who was killed in the line of duty last night,” the nearby Paulding County Sheriff’s Office said on its social media accounts.

Massachusetts K-9 ‘Died A True Hero' Protecting Officers, Police Say
Town officials are crediting the actions of a police officer and a police canine from preventing a more serious outcome in the June 4 shooting where two police officers were wounded and their assailant and the police dog were killed. Mayor Charles Kokoros and Police Chief Mark Dubois gave some additional details on the incident in a joint statement issued on Friday. "Without hesitation, our first responders put their lives on the line to protect and serve our community," Kokoros said in the statement. "We should all be proud of our men and women in law enforcement." The mayor also thanked Brewster Ambulance for administering lifesaving care for those injured in the incident. Patrol Officer Richard Seibert had entered the wooded area near the Braintree Village apartment complex along with Patrol Officers Matthew Donoghue and William Cushing and Cushing's canine, Kitt. They were searching for a suspect in a domestic dispute they knew was armed with multiple firearms.

Predators Targeting Children Online As They Spend More Time At Home During Pandemic
A year-long FOX 11 investigation has uncovered a troubling trend, online child exploitation has soared during the pandemic. Experts say because of the pandemic, kids' social lives have moved online and made them more vulnerable. "The pandemic isn't just losing academic time," said Dr. Lisa Strohman, "It's about opening the doors to predators online because they know we aren't watching." Strohman, who has worked with the FBI, is a psychologist who specializes in mental health and technology. She says isolation is also making kids seek out attention and validation online. She calls it a dangerous combination. We found live stream after live stream of children being coaxed, propositioned or worse. In one live stream, a young child can be heard warning other kids not to enter a private chat room with a man, because he had shown her porn. Another child talks about a man exposing himself to her. There were also live streams where children were offering to take off their clothes, or were leading games of truth or dare, prompting viewers to give them inappropriate dares. Some of the comments were from fellow children, but others were clearly adults. We always dropped out of the live streams before things got explicit and tipped off parents and law enforcement when we could.

Memorial Will Honor Dedicated LA County Firefighter Killed In Fire Station Shooting
Southern California firefighters will be among those gathering Thursday at the Forum in Inglewood to honor a Los Angeles County firefighter who was shot and killed by a colleague at a fire station. The memorial for firefighter Tory Carlon, a 44-year-old father of three daughters, was killed June 1 when he was shot June 1 at Fire Station 81 in the Santa Clarita Valley community of Agua Dulce. His death led to an outpouring of grief in the community north of Los Angeles, where many residents have developed a strong bond with firefighters who protect their homes and property from the region’s wildfires. Hundreds attended a candlelight vigil following the tragedy. Carlon was a 20-year member of the department. He is survived by his wife Heidi and their three daughters.

Statewide Flex Alert Issued For Thursday Evening As High Temperatures Continue In Southern California
An ongoing heat wave that descended upon much of Southern California this week is expected to linger, and prompted state officials to issue a flex alert for a few hours Thursday evening in an effort to conserve power. The flex alert, issued Wednesday afternoon by the California Independent System Operator, asks residents to conserve energy from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday evening. California ISO officials said Thursday and Friday are expected to be the hottest days of the week, although some areas saw their peak heat Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to remain hot in inland areas, such as the Inland Empire and the San Fernando and Antelope valleys, while gradual cooling is likely in coastal areas, weather forecasters said. “There’s no expectation of rotating power outages at this time,” the statement said. “(Thursday) and Friday will be the hottest days of this event. “Grid conditions are being monitored and can change quickly,” the statement said. The flex alert was issued about 2 p.m. Wednesday.

L.A. City Council Requests Ordinance To Ban Flavored Tobacco
The Los Angeles City Council Wednesday directed the City Attorney to draft an ordinance to ban flavored tobacco and menthol cigarette sales in the city, but exempted hookah tobacco products at existing smokers lounges. Under the proposed ordinance, which will be drafted and come back to the City Council for approval, existing smokers lounges will be able to sell hookah products for on-site or off-site consumption, but the city’s 4,500 tobacco retail stores will be banned from selling flavored tobacco, including hookah tobacco. Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, who motioned to amend the proposed ordinance to allow hookah products to be sold for off-site consumption, as well as on-site consumption at lounges, said she worried about the impact on small business owners, who also rely on selling hookah products for off-site activity. “This is an adult activity, so it doesn’t allow for young people to be exposed in these premises,” she said. She proposed an amendment to exempt the sale of shisha, which is the tobacco used for hookah.
