Dear John,
Last May, an astounding 144,000 illegal aliens were encountered crossing the southern border in a single month. By last month, "only" 52,000 were encountered. It's still a huge number, but the monthly number is back down closer to the September average of recent few years.
We can't know yet whether the surge is continuing until we see the numbers for this fall, when the temperature cools along the southern border.
According to a Border Patrol press release issued yesterday, there were almost one million "encounters" with border crossers during the last fiscal year. The Border Patrol estimates that they arrest at most half of those trying to slip by them.
About 65% of those apprehended during the first 11 months of the 2019 fiscal year were unaccompanied minors (UACs) or family units. This is really important because these two categories are treated differently under the patchwork of outdated laws and wrong-headed court decisions that govern who gets into this country.
An enormous number of the UACs and Family Units have been released into the country because they've overwhelmed the ability of our immigration courts to hear their cases. (The current immigration court case backlog is about one million!!!)
The surge worsened when word spread that if you showed up at the border with a child, or you were a minor yourself, you would likely be released into the interior of the country.
Who is working 24/7 to bring sanity back to U.S. immigration policy? NumbersUSA and our army of millions of online activists are! Only changes in the law can turn things around permanently. President Trump makes this point often. Please help us push Congress to reform our outdated immigration laws.

President Trump has worked hard to improve the situation.
He's cancelled Obama's DACA program, which allows about 690,000 illegal aliens who entered this country as minors to stay and have work permits. This move has been blocked by courts, but the Supreme Court will be giving a definite word on whether DACA can be ended within a few months.
Of course, he's moved heaven and earth to get the funding to build more secure bollard fencing along the border to replace ineffective barriers.
Most importantly, he's persuaded Mexico to cooperate with us to slow the flow of Central Americans from across Mexican territory to reach the United States. The Mexican army now has thousands of troops on their southern and northern borders.
The Trump administration has implemented its "Remain in Mexico" program. This policy requires asylum seekers who crossed illegally from Mexico to wait in Mexico until their cases can be heard. In July, the administration implemented its asylum rule which requires that asylum seekers entering or attempting to enter the southern land border seek refuge in the first safe country that they enter after leaving their home country. . . before they reach America.
But good as they are, President Trump's recent changes ARE NOT new laws. Only Congress can pass new laws. A future, hostile administration can undo whatever good Trump has done in enforcement very quickly.
Only laws last. Only well written, new laws will avoid courts tying everything up.
