Our democracy is under attack, folks -- and we’re not being hyperbolic, here. A few months ago, Emi mentioned that state legislatures across the nation proposed a slew of anti-democratic bills aimed at stifling voting rights and entrenching minority Republican rule for decades to come. 

The situation has only gotten more dire. As of mid-May 2021, legislators have introduced 389 bills with highly restrictive provisions in 48 states. And recently, Mitch McConnell and the GOP filibustered the creation of a bipartisan commission to further investigate the insurrection on January 6th. 

President Biden wasn’t exaggerating when he called the situation, “the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.”  

With certain Democrats even flip-flopping on critical pieces of voting protection legislation like the For the People Act, it’s pretty clear that achieving so-called “bipartisanship” and protecting our democracy are not actually high atop the Senate’s list of priorities. Every day the likelihood increases that another critical bill dies at the hands of the minority’s filibuster power.
