July 4th, 2019
This week is one of celebration — not just of the 4th of July (we in D.C. will bear witness to the biggest fireworks show ([link removed]) the city has ever seen) but also for federal candidates celebrating big fundraising hauls ([link removed]) as the second quarter came to close.
As we think about how best to commemorate Independence Day, when you gather with friends and family, consider reciting aloud the Declaration of Independence itself. That's what
Whitney North “Mike” Seymour, Jr. ([link removed]) did with his loved ones every Fourth of July, gathering his extended family as everyone took turns reading passages from the nation's founding document.
Sadly, Mike Seymour passed away just days before this year's Independence Day celebration. The board of directors and staff of the Center for Responsive Politics want to take this opportunity to pay tribute to our exceptional friend and colleague.
Mike was a dedicated member of the CRP board of directors for many years and before that served on the board of the National Library on Money in Politics (which later merged with CRP). Mike led a distinguished career as an attorney, a state senator from New York, a United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and a special prosecutor.
His devotion to transparency, citizen participation, and government integrity were hallmarks of that career and what led him to serve on CRP’s board. His erudition, wisdom and sparkling personality will be greatly missed.
