Hey Friend,
Ahead of Juneteenth this weekend, MediaJustice is ✨reflecting and rejoicing✨ over what it means—and what it takes—to be truly connected, represented, and free. In the past few months, we have marked the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, the pandemic, and global demands for a world without police violence. Today, however, we are celebrating the incredible work we’ve accomplished in partnership with our community, and to renew our commitment to justice and liberation.
We've worked hard and won big, but we need to keep the momentum going. Friend, will you donate to help MediaJustice build on our victories?

#ProtectBlackDissent Briefing & Petition Delivery After the January 6 insurrection, we delivered over 100,000 petition signatures demanding Congress protect our communities instead of increasing surveillance in the name of safety. Keynote speaker Rep. Rashida Tlaib explained, “Until we get serious about changing the culture of these law enforcement agencies, we can’t expand surveillance—no matter how well-intended.”
#BigTechOnBlast Watch Party Oscars who? In March, we hosted a special Disinformation Defense League (DDL) live event with games and expert guests as Congress grilled Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey about how their platforms promote disinformation and violence.
MJ Fundamentals: Spring 101 Series Before we can fight for media justice, we must ground ourselves in a common understanding of our struggle. This workshop series broke down important MediaJustice issues, including racialized disinformation, e-carceration, protecting Black dissent, digital security, and movement building.

Electronic Monitoring (E-Carceration) Map From ankle monitors to facial recognition technology, Black and brown people are being tracked and controlled for profit. In late March, MediaJustice launched the first national database and archive of lived experiences involving electronic monitoring. Before then, no national database covering electronic monitoring existed. Offering a state-by-state view of the use of electronic monitoring and resistance to this technology, our map is taking a huge step in filling this information gap.
Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) Website During the pandemic, access to affordable, reliable Internet became even more critical so the FCC launched the COVID-19 relief Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB). In response, MediaJustice launched EBBhelp.org to ensure as many of our communities as possible can take advantage of this support.
#EyesOnAmazon Week of Action Recap We hosted the #EyesOnAmazon Week of Action in early June to mark the 1 year anniversary of Amazon’s moratorium on facial recognition, closing out the week by delivering over 10,000 petition signatures to Jeff Bezos and Andy Jassy to demand they permanently ban surveillance tech, end contracts with police, and ensure workers are safe and respected. After years of fighting and one week after we launched our campaign, we earned a huge victory: Amazon announced it would extend its moratorium. However, “until further notice” isn’t the same as a permanent ban. We’ll keep pushing until it’s permanent.
