At the CDF Freedom Schools® program, our daily ritual of "Harambee" is sacred. From the Kiswahili word meaning "let's pull together," our CDF Freedom Schools version of Harambee is a high-energy, interactive opportunity for children and staff to come together and celebrate themselves and each other.

Harambee represents so much about what makes the CDF Freedom Schools program special and impactful. It starts by sharing a good book, of course, and it creates an atmosphere in which reading and engagement in learning are fun and culturally relevant. Our "cheers and chants" carry positive messages like "reading books is really cool," reminding children that they deserve meaningful learning opportunities. We also take time during our daily Harambee ritual to recognize special achievements and share gratitude for ways that others have helped us.

I love Harambee because of the power that it has to change everyone's disposition through participation. From our "level one scholars" at five or six years old to our "level four scholars" in their last years of high school, our young people bring so much positive energy to Harambee that stays with them throughout their days at the CDF Freedom Schools program. No matter what children might bring with them from outside our space, Harambee offers a chance to reset and commit to positivity, and it's truly amazing to watch in action!
