Today marks 50 years since the declaration of the “war on drugs” by President Nixon. It’s caused immeasurable harm and devastation, disproportionately to Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities.
It’s time to end the racist drug war, repair the harms, and build a world without it. Decriminalizing drugs is the most important step we must take right now to do it.
DPA is proud to be leading this fight with you and allies from across movements. This morning, I’m taking our message to Congress where I’m testifying at a hearing on the war on drugs.
On this anniversary, I hope you will raise your voice too. Please check out what we’ve been up to this week and get involved:
- We worked with members of Congress to introduce the Drug Policy Reform Act, an unprecedented bill that would decriminalize drugs at the federal level. This historic bill was officially filed today. Take action to urge your lawmakers to support it.
- Watch our new video about how the drug war was a lie and why decriminalizing all drugs is so important as we fight to end it.
- Visit our new Decriminalization Exchange to learn more about drug decriminalization including a first-of-its-kind interactive map to see how drugs are criminalized where you live and across the country.
- We partnered with the ACLU to push President Biden to take 10 immediate steps to end the drug war. Join us by taking action.
- We teamed up with the Movement for Black Lives and I’ll be speaking on their webinar tonight at 5pm ET to talk about why drug decriminalization must be focused on reparations for the war on drugs. Register to join us today.
As you can see, we’ve been busy this week and we hope you will join us to fight back against 50 years of the failed drug war.
The drug war has stigmatized, criminalized, and punished millions of us and invaded almost every aspect of our society. It’s going to take all of us to end it.
