Dear John
You probably recognise John Lynes. He’s the 93 year old rebel from Hastings who’s been risking his liberty for the planet since XR began, and long before that.
On Tuesday John was convicted under Section 14 of the Public Order Act, for blocking a road during the 2020 September Rebellion.
Despite presenting clear evidence of the harm caused by the climate emergency, the court refused to accept John’s defence of ‘necessity’ - where a defendant argues they have no choice but to break the law. Instead, they imposed hefty court costs and a fine on the great-grandfather of 11.
When will the government stop criminalising peaceful protest and take the kind of action that matches the urgency of the crisis?
John represents one of around 2,000 rebels prosecuted for Extinction Rebellion actions. Thanks to XRUK donors, our Legal Defence Fund is helping to pay for John’s legal fees.
With your support we can ensure activists like John have the support they need to navigate the challenging court process, including access to invaluable legal advice.
John experienced what climate breakdown looks like while working in refugee camps in the Middle East.
“…I saw at first hand what it means when the village well runs dry. No water for crops. No water for cattle. No water for children. Terrible choices: who is to have the last drop? That’s what climate change means. It’s what climate change is going to mean here at home if we allow the day to come when we turn on the tap and water no longer comes out.”
John and many other conscientious protectors have dedicated their time and their freedom, because they’re all terrified of the consequences of inaction.
We will continue to demand change from our Government. For us, for our children, for those suffering right now.
Will you help us to support more rebels like John?
Each of these rebels has their own story, their own motivation, and their own fears for the future. You can find John’s story, along with many others here.
Thank you.
With love and rage.
