Dear John,

The official first day of summer is right around the corner! But the cicadas are already here. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be looking forward to the eventual departure of Brood X. In the meantime, under the constant din of flapping wings, let’s take a moment to dive into the happenings at TON.

Our End of Season survey is closing soon. Please don’t miss this opportunity to share information about your program, results and interests. The information collected through the survey is incredibly useful to me when I have opportunities to share the impact of local VITA programs before Congress. By providing a richer picture of the VITA program and its impact, we can better advocate for the field and its needs throughout the year. Please take a moment to answer the survey if you haven’t already.

We’re also hosting fireside chats later this month with our fantastic Rockefeller cohort. These personal, bite-sized conversations cover the hot topics of the filing season and how one of your fellow VITA programs tackled them. Settle down with a cup of coffee and join us by the “fireside!”

Please encourage your volunteers and partners to join TON so they can stay up to date on what’s happening in the community tax preparation field!

Happy Summer!

Rebecca M. Thompson, Director, Field Engagement & TON

Spotlight: End of Season Survey Closing Soon!

We want to hear from you! The annual End of Season Survey will be only open for the next nine days, so please take 10-15 minutes to complete the survey. Each program that completes the survey will be entered into a drawing to win a $100 Amazon gift card!

Your answers are invaluable to TON as we examine the impact of COVID-19 on tax preparation programs as well as the overall successes and challenges of the filing season. To complete the survey, we recommend that you have your 2020 and 2021 tax site statistics ready. We ask you about the number of returns filed, number of EITC returns, client AGI and more. These statistics will help shape our understanding of your organization and the VITA field at large. Thank you for completing the survey!

MORE DETAILS TO HELP YOU:

WHO: One person from each community tax program, possibly a tax program manager or site coordinator, should complete the survey.

WHY: To recap the last two filing seasons, help to inform our plans for the offseason and identify where support is needed in preparation for the 2022 filing season.

WHEN: Please complete the survey by Friday, June 25, 2021

Updates from the IRS and SPEC

Non-Filer Portal

The Treasury Department and the IRS have unveiled an online Non-filer Sign-up tool designed to help eligible families who don’t normally file tax returns register for the monthly Advance Child Tax Credit payments, scheduled to begin July 15. This tool is also designed to help eligible individuals who don’t normally file income tax returns register for the $1,400 third round of Economic Impact Payments and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for any amount of the first two rounds of Economic Impact Payments they may have missed.

CTC Awareness Day is June 21

The Biden-Harris administration announced that Monday, June 21st will be Child Tax Credit Awareness Day—a day of action to get the word out far and wide on the upcoming monthly payments that will benefit nearly all families. The administration will be calling on elected officials, faith-based groups, organizations that fight for children and families, and other partners to join us on June 21st to raise awareness that help is on the way. Join Prosperity Now on social media as we raise awareness on the CTC and how it can help millions of families nationwide!

Zip-Code Level Data Now Available

Treasury Department’s Office of Tax Analysis analyzed IRS data to identify where children who may be eligible to be claimed for the expanded and newly-advanceable Child Tax Credit but who had not been claimed on a recent tax return are located. The data can be used to help organizations focus their outreach efforts seeking to sign up non-filers for monthly Child Tax Credit payments. This ZIP Code-level analysis is available here.
