Carrying on a Legacy of Resistance
Celebrating Juneteenth and its ties to PIC abolition
This Saturday, June 19, we celebrate Juneteenth. In the midst of right-wing efforts to target the transmission of knowledge ([link removed]) of the Black Radical Tradition ([link removed]) in similar ways as the bi-partisan targeting of the work to Defund Policing, Critical Resistance continues the fight in solidarity with Black freedom movements. The potential state recognition of Juneteenth as a national holiday ([link removed]) must be accompanied by concrete follow through on the demands that everyday Black people are making to invest in their well being - whether at the site of the need for post COVID rent relief ([link removed]) , for reparations
([link removed]) or reducing contact with police by way of defunding them ([link removed]) .
As fights over the next week pick up to secure gains against policing and for community power in municipal budgets, propelled forward by this past year’s uprisings and mobilizations, we at CR encourage a grounded understanding of Juneteenth and it’s legacy within the fight for abolition.
