Dear John,
Too often, “entitlement reformers” use the canard that “no one in Washington has the courage” to address Social Security and Medicare’s financial challenges, which simply is not true.
Right now there are a number of bills in Congress that would strengthen Americans’ retirement and health security — without adding to the national debt or cutting benefits.
In addition to holding the line on mounting threats to earned benefits, the National Committee is working to take advantage of a rapidly closing window of opportunity to push forward urgently needed priorities for older Americans, including:
- Boosting Social Security benefits and ensuring beneficiaries receive an adequate Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) each year;
- Lowering prescription drug costs by allowing Medicare to negotiate the price of drugs directly with drug companies, and then using the estimated $450 billion in savings to expand Medicare to cover dental, hearing and vision care; and
- Requiring the wealthy to pay their fair share into Social Security which would go a long way to shore up this critical program for the future.
These are the priorities that our members and supporters have told us to keep fighting for in Washington.
It’s just a matter of political will! And so far, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has made it clear that he will block any progress on the issues that matter most to older Americans.
That’s why I believe we must dig in our heels, refuse to back down and give our all to preserving and improving the benefits that are so vital to the health and retirement security of growing numbers of retirees. Please sign our Urgent Petition today!
I hope I can count you with us in this critical fight for the future of Social Security and Medicare!
Sincerely,
