Companies, like 3M, often use pink ribbon promotions to try to distract from their PR problems. What was 3M trying to cover up when it constructed the world's largest breast cancer ribbon made from 75,000 pink Post-it notes in 2004?

Tell 3M to stop pinkwashing: stop producing, using, and selling all PFAS!

In 3M’s case, the company has been deflecting concerns about a toxic class of chemicals called PFAS, that they helped pioneer and promote, by claiming to care about breast cancer. Known as forever chemicals, PFAS are linked to a number of health problems and may increase the risk of breast cancer.

In 2004, 3M built a 70-foot-tall pink ribbon out of Post-its in New York’s Times Square. The same year, Minnesotans filed a class action lawsuit against 3M, because chemicals from 3M's Cottage Grove plant made them sick. Since then, a growing number of states have sued 3M for PFAS water contamination. Most recently, a federal judge allowed a class action suit against 3M to go forward on behalf of every U.S. resident with detectable levels of PFAS in their body who have experienced harmful health effects as a result of exposure.
 
Yet 3M continues to cover up the health and environmental harms of PFAS—this after they spent years withholding important scientific evidence of harm from regulators. Instead of cleaning up their business, 3M has tried to pinkwash its image as it grew into a Fortune 500 corporation with $120 billion in annual sales — including pink ribbon Post-it notes. Today, the company continues to market pink ribbon promotions to show they’re “sticking up” for breast cancer.

But pink ribbon Post-its can’t cover up 3M’s toxic chemicals. If 3M really cared about breast cancer, they would stop putting our health at risk and stop pinkwashing.
