Friends,

One of our great wins from the historic LA teachers' strike of 2019 was a commitment from LAUSD to fund 30 new Community Schools over the next two years. Reclaim Our Schools LA has been working towards this goal for a long time, and it took a broad coalition and a rain-soaked strike to make it happen.

A Community School is a public school that leverages resources inside and outside the school to create conditions that ensure equitable opportunities for all children. It involves every part of the school community in a bottom-up assessment of assets and needs, and the development of a real plan to uplift and transform the school. This includes things like:
  • A broad, engaging, culturally relevant, and challenging academic curriculum
  • Emphasis on high-quality instruction over excessive testing
  • Wraparound services like counseling and clinical care
  • Restorative justice and other positive behavioral discipline practices
  • Family and community engagement
  • Inclusive school leadership where parents, students, and stakeholders are represented and have decision-making power
The LAUSD school year began last month, and with it, 20 schools were newly designated as Community Schools. Now it’s time to make sure these new Community Schools are set up for success.

The District’s first training brought together over 250 parents, educators, students, administrators, and community groups for an early morning orientation at Wilson High School. Representing 20 schools from different regions of LAUSD, our first cohort was immersed in various tenets of the Community Schools model and connected with other LAUSD campuses.

Next, Catskill Elementary School held a forum on becoming a Community School, bringing together nearly 100 parents, educators, students, and community partners.

The Community Schools movement is growing, with Los Angeles leading the way.
