Pushout
Despite increased attention to the mass and over-incarceration of Black men, the plight of criminalized Black women and girls remains overlooked, underreported and under analyzed. Reversing this troubling trend is the goal of this year’s United Methodist Women’s adult Mission Study, Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools. Join the UMW Faith Talks podcast on Thursday, June 17, at 1 p.m. when they’ll discuss Pushout with the Rev. Vanessa M. Williams, author of the leader’s guide for the study at this year’s Mission U events. Juneteenth
From the United Methodist General Commission on Religion & Race
Juneteenth (June 19, 1865) is the oldest known African-American celebration. On June 19, 1865, slaves in Galveston, Texas, received word of their emancipation two months after the Civil War had ended, and two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had gone into effect on January 1, 1863.
