John,
We already knew Donald Trump’s abuse and politicization of the Department of Justice was bad. But in just the last few days, there have been some truly jaw-dropping new revelations:
- Just yesterday, we learned that hours before Trump announced that Attorney General Bill Barr was stepping down, he had already begun pressuring the incoming acting AG Jeffrey Rosen to advance his lies about election fraud. This was an especially brazen attack on the DOJ’s independence and on our democracy—and one that we already suspected, given Rosen’s refusal to answer questions at a Congressional hearing last month about Trump’s communications with him about the election. We launched an investigation into Trump’s communications with Rosen following that hearing.
- Then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows also reportedly got involved in the pressure campaign, repeatedly pushing Rosen to investigate baseless election conspiracy theories. Meadows’s actions would appear to violate a longstanding prohibition on nearly all White House staff contacting the DOJ about investigations. We’re investigating Meadows’s communications.
- As part of a leak investigation in 2017 and 2018, the DOJ took the highly unusual step of secretly seizing the data of two members of Congress, their aides and family members, including a minor. Despite the investigation providing no proof of leaks, AG Barr reportedly told prosecutors to keep digging, raising questions about politicization. We’re investigating this episode too.
We expect that we’ll continue to learn even more about Trump’s corruption of the DOJ and the lengths he went to in order to cling to power. It was already outrageous that, given what we knew in January, so many Republican senators failed to convict him at his second impeachment trial and bar him from serving in office again. Given what we know now, it’s even more appalling.
At CREW, we’re never going to stop fighting for answers and accountability—we won’t allow Trump’s attacks on our democracy to be covered up. If you’re able to help us keep fighting for answers, consider making a donation today. Grassroots donors are a key part of our strength—we couldn’t do it without you.
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
