Diabetes UK
Hi John,

My name is Snita and I'm taking over this edition of our e-newsletter to share my #DiabetesStory for Diabetes Week!

I've been diabetic for about 12 years. For eight years, I was on medication. For the last three years, I've been in remission, so I've just been managing with a healthy lifestyle, a good diet and exercise.

Diabetes never goes away, so as soon as I stop eating healthy, my blood sugar goes up. It’s probably easier being on medication because that will help manage it, but it is also easy to think I can eat what I want and the medication will take care of it. That’s what I use to think, but all the time my blood sugar was going higher and higher which could lead to complications.

The first thing I did was sort my diet out which meant no processed foods and cooking at home more so I knew what was going into my recipes and then into my body. Also I tried to drink water instead of sugary drinks and cut out all sugar in my diet which was very difficult, but I had to do it.

And now three years on, I feel much better, but I still have to be careful.

Below I've included one of my favourite recipes, my delicious roasted cauliflower, and some content that I've found the most helpful for my type 2 diabetes.

I hope you enjoy it!

My quick and easy roasted cauliflower

I've started fermenting foods because it really helps put good bacteria into your gut. I make my own Kefir and yogurt which is easy and tasty, and I get great satisfaction from making it myself.

I've learned to make some quick and easy dishes when I’m in a hurry. One of them being these delicious roasted cauliflower florets, which can be a side dish or a main with a big salad.

Snita, swimming
Why swimming is my favourite form of exercise

I go to an outdoor heated pool in the colder months and to the lake when it’s warmer. Being outdoors makes me feel so good and it's a social event for me. I meet friends at the lake and then we have breakfast together. I always feel like I’m on holiday - the best medicine ever. Swimming also helps to improve insulin sensitivity, fitness, and weight loss - what’s not to like? The Diabetes UK website has lots of info on why swimming is good for you.

Snita, who put her type 2 diabetes into remission
Remission: I didn't think it was possible

After eight weeks of being on a low calorie diet, I was told my diabetes had gone into remission. Now, the hardest thing is to maintain my weight and blood sugar for the rest of my life. Before, I'd always think, "Why did it happen to me?" I thought I was sick so I couldn’t do things, and it's only now that I think of it as something that's helped me turn my life around for the better. I am probably more healthy than I've ever been. Diabetes Symptoms
Spot the signs and symptoms of diabetes

Before I was diagnosed, I experienced a lot of different symptoms. From aching feet, headaches and tiredness for no reason, to sweating, shaking hands and dry mouth. I'd get mood swings which was probably due to my blood sugar going too high and then too low.. and so many other things. Thinking back, everything seems like a blur. I found this video by Diabetes UK really helpful - it breaks down the most common symptoms of diabetes in a really simple way. Share with your friends and family to spread the word!
