Dear John,
Putting together an effective state-by-state strategy to advance election security best practices in a way that protects voter access is a complex puzzle. At Verified Voting, we’re seeing new pieces added every day. Over the past six months, as more states moved forward with plans for evidence-based audits or replacing insecure equipment, our team provided expert testimony and technical guidance on decisions that will impact millions of voters. This included:
-
Advising Texas lawmakers on legislation to establish risk-limiting audits and eliminate paperless voting systems
-
Testifying in support of risk-limiting audits in Maine, Maryland, and Connecticut, to name just a few states
-
Urging Louisiana, the last remaining state entirely reliant on voting machines with no paper record, to adopt paper ballots
-
Successfully persuading the Rhode Island Board of Elections to reconsider internet voting (which remains fundamentally insecure), and pushing back against proposals in multiple other states.
In short, we’re making progress on a nationwide scale -- and it’s all thanks to supporters like you. You’ve helped us grow our fantastic team, and vastly increased our ability to respond when election officials and policy makers across the country reach out for guidance.
But even with this increased capacity, we can’t be everywhere at once, and the challenges we face are only growing more complex. Even the concept of “election security” is at risk of being co-opted to prevent voters from making their voices heard. Now more than ever, we must raise our voices together for true best practices that provide a trustworthy voting record, and give voters justified confidence that they can trust election results.
As the next midterm cycle gears up and new states reach out to us, we need to keep filling in the gaps -- and the most important piece in solving that puzzle is you. Please support our efforts with a gift today.
With thanks,
Cris Landa
P.S. Our monthly donors play a crucial role in providing the dedicated support that allows ut to respond wherever we're needed, whenever we're needed. We hope you'll consider joining their ranks.
