I’m pleased to introduce you to the newest member of The Sentencing Project team, William “Bill” Underwood. Bill is a Senior Fellow for The Sentencing Project’s Campaign to End Life Imprisonment and will advocate for policy reforms that reject excessive punishments in favor of restorative approaches to public safety. In January 2021, Bill was granted compassionate release after serving 33 years on a federal life without parole sentence. His dedication and commitment to rehabilitating his life, his unwavering love and devotion to his children and grandchildren, and his continuous efforts to create a culture of responsibility in his prison community inspired many, including Senator Cory Booker who introduced the Second Look Act of 2019 with Bill in mind. On Thursday, June 17th at 10am ET, Bill will testify at a hearing before the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on the Judiciary. He will discuss his 33 years of incarceration in the federal prison system for drug-related offenses, call for an end to mandatory minimum sentences, and urge Congress to enact a second look at sentences over 10 years. I hope you will watch tomorrow's landmark hearing and cheer him on! Follow the link below to join the hearing tomorrow: Undoing the Damage of the War on Drugs: A Renewed Call for Sentencing Reform |
