Every year in our country, 36,000 Americans are killed by guns. That's an average of 100 people per day. The CDC reported 39,773 people in the United States died from gunshot wounds in 2017, the most single-year gun deaths in 50 years.
Action is needed now. We can't wait.
The House has passed bills like the Universal Background Checks Act to establish universal background checks and the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019 to close the “Charleston loophole” and expand national firearms background checks to include gun transfers. And we must do more.
These bills will save lives, yet they are stalled in the Senate under Mitch McConnell's failed leadership. As we gear up for 2020 and work to keep a Democratic majority in the House and take back the Senate and White House, we must support and elect candidates who will support gun reform legislation.
We need real reform. We need it now. Not one more life should be lost to senseless gun violence.
