[link removed] [[link removed]]Dear John,
Seabirds, sea turtles, and all of us sea lovers can breathe a little easier today.
I am pleased to report that late last night the Maine Legislature enacted LD 1023 — a bill that defines the intentional releasing of balloons in our state as littering.

This is a big step forward for protecting Maine’s wildlife and wild places from balloon debris.
Coastal Reps. Genevieve McDonald of Stonington and Lydia Blume of York have been true champions in this fight. We appreciate their tireless work to get this legislation over the finish line. Next, this legislation heads to the Governor’s desk for approval. We’ll keep you informed as this bill (hopefully) turns into law.
As a former coastal birds biologist, whale watch naturalist, and marine mammal researcher, I thank you for signing our petition earlier this year and for staying informed on this effort.
Stay tuned for more news from Augusta on other critical bills for our environment and climate future.
Best,
Ches
P.S. There was a roll call vote in the Maine House on this legislation last month, so we can see exactly how our representatives voted! Click here [[link removed]] to view the roll call and see how they did.
