Friend,
The Republican Party is trying to destroy our democracy.
Ever since Black people could vote in this country, the right-wing has tried to suppress their right to vote. And in last year’s election, majority-Black Detroit became a focal point as the GOP tried to steal our votes.
This month, Michigan’s Senate Elections Committee voted along party lines to advance a package of bills that will make it harder for people to vote, especially Black and brown people.1 They’re even threatening to use a loophole to get around our Democratic Governor’s pledge to veto the bills if they come to her desk.
These bills would undermine the will of the people of Michigan, who voted overwhelmingly in 2018 for a constitutional amendment expanding voting rights.
Michiganders also voted in 2018 to end gerrymandering—which the MI GOP has used to control the state legislature for a decade.
Starting with this year’s new redistricting process, partisan gerrymandering is coming to an end in our state. So the Michigan GOP is trying another way to hold onto minority rule. That’s why they’re pushing a slate of bills that would make it harder to vote absentee and in-person.2
Will you join me in the fight against these attacks on our democracy, from the local level up to the federal level?
Please chip in now to stop Republican attacks on our voting rights. We can’t let the GOP undermine the will of the people.
This year’s massive state-level attacks on our voting rights are exactly why we need the national, comprehensive voting reform bill known as the For the People Act. We passed it in the U.S. House, and now we’re pushing for it in the Senate.
I’m proud to have brought amendments to the bill, which passed in the final version. These amendments help high school students (especially those in marginalized communities) register to vote, and extend hours of voting locations so that working-class Americans don't have to choose between their job and their vote.
Our communities are best represented when as many people as possible are involved and engaged in our democracy.
As part of a statewide tour to get input from people about their own district lines, Michigan’s new independent redistricting commission is in Detroit right now. And our team has been informing our district’s residents about this important opportunity to make their voices heard.
This is one of the reasons I ran for office in the first place: I want our government to reflect the will of the people. Communities like mine have gone unheard for far too long, and I’m going to keep fighting until we get the representation we deserve.
Please chip in what you can afford today so we can build a government that actually works for all of us.
