We're not being dramatic or hyperbolic when we say that the Republican party is undoing the fabric of American democracy. Now, former president Barack Obama is sounding the alarm.
In a recent interview, Obama reminded us all that our democracy isn't something that we can take for granted.
“I think we have to worry when one of our major political parties is willing to embrace a way of thinking about our democracy that would be unrecognizable and unacceptable even five years ago. … My hope is that the tides will turn. But that does require each of us to understand that this experiment in democracy is not self-executing. It doesn't happen just automatically."
The evidence that Republicans have given up on democracy is everywhere we look. Republican-led state legislatures are ramming through absurd restrictions to voting rights. Extremist activists are recruiting anti-democratic Republican candidates to run for Secretary of State in multiple states -- something that could give them real power to change election results in the future. And a recent poll showed that more than half of Republicans think that Trump is still the “real” President.
Choosing to ignore this reality plays directly into the hands of the far-right ideologues who control the Republican Party and who are actively working to undermine our democracy.
