Any infrastructure package passed in 2021 must have climate justice at its center — that’s why Ed has told his Senate colleagues: No climate, no deal.

Friends -
Let me be direct here: the infrastructure deal that the so-called “Gang of 10” Senators have come up with can only be described as climate denial masquerading as bipartisanship.
We cannot have an infrastructure bill in 2021 that doesn’t have climate at its center. Plain and simple.
This bill, if done correctly, has the potential to be a landmark legislative accomplishment of the Biden administration and of our Democratic Congress. But any package that chooses to ignore the climate crisis under the guise of bipartisan capitulation would be an historic failure.
The Democratic Party won in 2020 running on this issue. Together, we defeated Donald Trump, we held onto the House, and we took control of the Senate.
These victories were no accident, and it’s time we started legislating like it. They were the result of millions of young people, working people, and people in frontline communities organizing and mobilizing around climate justice, and they have a big IOU they should be able to call in. We must have an infrastructure package that embodies that, and this compromise bill simply does not meet that task.
Our planet cannot survive another successful Republican obstructionist strategy. It’s time to move on from feigned bipartisanship and pass an infrastructure package that places environmental justice, clean energy, and job creation at its core.
A bill of this importance must match the scale and magnitude of the crisis our planet is facing.
There is no other option.
No climate, no deal.

Ed Markey
