Imagine how bad things could get if McConnell becomes majority leader in 2022.

Dear MoveOn member,

In an interview over the weekend, Mitch McConnell said that blocking President Obama from appointing Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court and opening the door for Donald Trump to pack the court with ultra-conservative justices was "the single most consequential thing I've done in my time as majority leader of the Senate."1 And he said that he will do it again—if he becomes the majority leader before the 2024 election.2

There are truly no words to describe how despicably hypocritical McConnell is—proudly proclaiming he would block President Biden from appointing a Supreme Court justice if given the chance, when just months ago he forced through the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett after voting in the 2020 election was already underway.

We cannot, under any circumstances, allow this man to take back control of the Senate next year and put his plans into motion. The very hard reality, however, is that it is a big uphill battle to stop McConnell and the GOP from regaining control of the Senate next year. Which is why we need your help, John.

Will you chip in $5 a month to kickstart MoveOn's all-out 2022 midterm elections campaign and ensure we have the consistent funds we need to get out the vote and keep Mitch McConnell out of power?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

McConnell has been at the root of Republican obstruction and corrupt behavior since 2008, when he announced that his singular goal after President Obama was elected was to stop every single piece of legislation President Obama supported in its tracks. He even gleefully calls himself the "grim reaper" of the Senate, happily killing legislation that would help working families and doing whatever it takes to further marginalize people of color, while pushing through bills that give handouts to his billionaire backers.3

And his behavior has only gotten worse. He helped push through the worst of Trump's agenda, and even without the power that comes from being majority leader, he is once again blocking every single piece of legislation President Biden supports—including using the filibuster to stop the bipartisan commission to investigate the deadly white supremacist insurrection at the Capitol on January 6.

Imagine how bad things could get if McConnell becomes majority leader in 2022. He and the Republicans could hold open Supreme Court seats for years. They could stop any appointment to the Cabinet or federal courts. And they could finish what they tried to start after the 2020 election and overturn the results of the presidential election in 2024, ending our democracy as we know it.

If that sounds outlandish to you, it shouldn't. Today's Republican Party is unhinged, and we need to be clear-eyed about it.

We cannot let McConnell regain control of the Senate, but the truth is that we are facing an uphill battle. The party of the president nearly always loses seats during the first midterms after a presidential election, and Democrats are currently holding on to the Senate majority by the skin of their teeth. We need to go bigger, get more creative, and turn out even more voters than ever to hold and expand our majorities next year, and MoveOn is already hard at work to make that happen.

Over the next few months, we will be testing out brand-new tactics to organize and turn out voters, building the infrastructure for a massive get-out-the-vote volunteer campaign, endorsing and supporting strong progressive candidates up and down the ballot, and much, much more.

But we can do it only with your help. Donations to progressive groups like MoveOn have plummeted since January, while the GOP has been raising millions for their war chest. We need to catch up, or they could build an insurmountable advantage.

Will you chip in $5 a month to stop Mitch McConnell from regaining control of the Senate in 2022?

Yes, I'll chip in monthly.

No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.

Thanks for all you do.
