Here in America, there is supposed to be a bright line between politics and the Department of Justice (DOJ).

New reporting suggests that the Trump administration crossed that line and used the DOJ as a political tool against Members of Congress, the press, and even his own White House Counsel.

Perverting the justice system to persecute political rivals is the kind of thing that happens in totalitarian countries and is fundamentally unpatriotic. That’s why, as Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, I’m announcing an investigation into President Trump’s dictator-like behavior.

I’m fully aware that taking on Trump directly is going to lead to a surge of attacks against me, and I also know that there is no limit to how nasty they will be. The temptation to turn the page on the Trump era is strong because of all we’ve been through already.

However, that is not an option, especially with the former president openly fantasizing about a violent coup and a Republican Party that has chosen to grovel at his feet.

We need to set a strong precedent so that Trump’s attacks on democracy and the rule of law will never happen again. That means investigating his actions fully, holding him accountable, and being ready to fight back against whatever he throws at me.
