Can Artificial Intelligence Save Patients--and Doctors?

“Artificial intelligence is all the hype in medicine today. It's touted as being transformative like nothing else, reaching into virtually every aspect of health care,” writes Robert D. Truog, a physician and director of the Harvard Center for Bioethics, in the new issue of the Hastings Center Report. “Where will AI take us? One thing is for sure—by integrating, synthesizing, and interpreting the data associated with medical care, AI will leave physicians with more time to devote to other purposes. Is Your Face a Window into Your Brain's Health?

Scientists are now analyzing photos of the faces of people with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism in hopes of identifying facial features that occur with the expression of genes that underlie these conditions. While this kind of analysis might someday help with diagnoses, it poses ethical dangers. It could worsen the stigmatization of people with these disorders and it calls to mind the historical misuse of photography to advance eugenic ideas about race, ethnicity, and intellectual disability.
