Because of the generous gifts of people like you to provide people in the toughest places with safe, clean water, together we helped provide clean water and sanitation programs for more than 22,500 women, children, and families so far this year. Our in-country teams drilled deep water wells, repaired broken ones, and provided water filters to people without access to safe drinking water. They were also able to access new people groups – like Mary and her family, who were otherwise unreachable. Mary stood in line for more than four hours daily to get water. The well in her East African village was broken, and water barely trickled out. She stood in the crowded line of 150 women and children, where social distancing and other COVID-19 protocols were not enforced. She did this because her only other option was to fill her water jug with dirty water from the stream, putting her family at risk of waterborne diseases — neither option was safe. In Mary’s village women are tasked with finding water for their family’s daily needs. Many girls dropped out of school because of the time required to fetch water. Water became so scarce that many people stopped using clean water for bathing and washing their clothes. Instead they used dirty stream water for everything other than drinking. Our team members repaired the well in Mary’s village, and the entire community has benefited. They no longer need to worry about waterborne diseases like typhoid, and they are able to bathe and wash their clothes in clean water again. Local team members are building relationships with people in the community, and when the time is right, they will tell them about Jesus. Along with the well repair, our team shared important hygiene and COVID-19 prevention methods with Mary and other women in the village. After learning the importance of social distancing, they created a system of taking shifts at the repaired well to fill all the water jugs quickly, allowing women to come one at a time to pick up their jugs to take home. This innovative method for drawing water removed the need to wait in line and gather in groups at the well. Mary told our team, “[We] save time for other activities, and school-age girls can return to class.” Your gift helped provide clean water for people like Mary and ensures they experience the kindness of Jesus and hear about His eternal hope. Thank you for relieving suffering, restoring dignity, and revealing hope. |
