Transformational Justice In Action Meeting on June 18
Join TJA for their monthly action meeting this Friday, June 18, 2021, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. CT (3:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m. PT).
This month, we'll discuss building a powerful base to win our campaign on voting rights restoration. Specifically, we'll focus on building a base consisting of faith institutions and impacted people and through strong relationships with trusted entities. We will also look at social media posts created from our work at the May action meeting.
You must register in advance for the meeting here. Civil Rights of Immigrants Father's Day Action
In honor of undocumented fathers across the country, Gamaliel and the Civil Rights of Immigrants Coordinating Committee are holding a National Day of Phone Calls in support of the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021 (H.R.1177/ S.348) on June 21, 2021.
Gamaliel has committed to making 1,000 calls on June 21 — can you help us meet this goal? We're asking that you call your members of Congress on June 21 at any time that is convenient to you. As encouragement, please watch these videos from Rev. Dr. John Welch, Rev. Edward Thompson, and Rev. David Bigsby.
On June 21, call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 to be connected with your members of Congress and use this phone banking script prepared by Gamaliel of California. Use this form to make a record of your calls so Gamaliel can follow up with the elected officials.
Help us spread the word by sharing this announcement on Gamaliel’s website on social media. Immigrants are as American as apple pie...and rice and beans!
Gamaliel and the Civil Rights of Immigrants Campaign are sending a message to members of Congress on July 2: Immigrants are as American as apple pie and rice and beans!
We invite you to join us in sending this message. To participate, take an apple pie and some rice and beans (or any other food that represents a local immigrant community) to your representative's local office on July 2. Take a picture of yourself dropping it off and send it to [email protected] so we can create a powerful image of everyone who supports Complete Inclusive Immigration Reform!

Updates from The Ezekiel Project (Saginaw, MI)
Legislative Meetings:
Staff and leaders from The Ezekiel Project tackled Capitol Week (Monday, May 24th- Friday, May 28th) through several issue areas. We attended a power meeting with Michigan's 32nd District Senator, Ken Horn. Zeke staff and leaders, in collaboration with statewide partners, asked for Sen. Horn's support on House Bill 4156. This bill is looking to lower Michigan's student-to-counselor ratio from 1:691 to 1:400. Our leaders shared powerful mental health impact stories and asked for Sen. Horn's commitment to mental health. Senator Horn did not give his full support on this bill, but agreed to have follow-up conversations after researching HB 4156.
Ezekiel staff and leaders attended legislative meetings advocating for Civil Rights of Michigan with statewide partners. This group met with Rep. Sarah Anthony from Michigan's 68th District and Rep. Kevin Hertel from the 18th House District. During these meetings, staff and leaders asked for Michigan State Police to end collaboration with the U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE), for an increase in the budget for English language classes, legal services, and citizenship classes from $250K to $5M, and for elected officials to pass the Drive Safe Michigan proposal to approve drivers licenses for immigrants.
ACLU of MI Smart Justice Week of Action:
The Ezekiel Project team collaborated with the ACLU of MI for a week of action around the Smart Justice campaign from Monday, June 7th- Friday, June 11th. The Smart Justice campaign is focused on bail and pretrial reform, which disproportionately impacts people of color in our state. Each night at 6:30pm EST, ACLU hosted outreach events to push our elected officials to engage in the conversation about bail reform, and partner with us to successfully enact these critical reforms to Michigan's criminal justice system.
Read by Grade Three Advocacy:
The Ezekiel Project's Education Justice Task Force has been pushing for the elimination of retention under Michigan's Read by Grade Three Law. Staff and leaders worked together to write a letter of advocacy to Saginaw representatives asking them to waive retention due to pandemic learning conditions. We partnered with our member congregations and Faith Leaders to band together to advocate for research backed intervention for literacy, rather than retention.
