Remembering shared history: Dreamland and Juneteenth As Tulsa, Oklahoma marked the 100th anniversary of the 1921 massacre, survivors and their descendants continued their fight for recognition and reparations. If you missed Dreamland, the two-hour documentary that celebrates the success of Black Wall Street while investigating the attack that destroyed it, the film is now on demand via CNNgo and your cable provider. And history shows that Tulsa wasn’t alone: Don't miss this installment of CNN.com’s "History Refocused", which explains how the Tulsa massacre was part of decades of racial violence that shaped America.
We're also looking ahead to Juneteenth, the June 19 holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the US. In season 5 of United Shades, W. Kamau Bell traveled to New Orleans to explore the topic of reparations. He learns that while there is a popular assumption that reparations means doling out a check, many scholars and activists believe the first step is an unflinching acknowledgement of the scale and scope of slavery, as well as the systemic oppression that followed. Watch the episode via CNNgo and check out a bonus scene here.
Pride Month spotlight: Legendary designer, Halston There’s a story in CNN Films’ Halston that still stands out more than half a century after it happened, Matthew Ponsford writes in CNN Style. After facing homophobic insults at the home of a wealthy client, Halston told his then-assistant that he believed they'd never move past the discrimination they’d just witnessed. But, Ponsford writes, Halston went on to do exactly that, rising to become “perhaps the single most influential figure in American fashion.”
As the country reopens and style beyond sweatpants makes a resurgence, we’re turning to Halston for more sartorial inspiration. The 2019 documentary explores Halston’s expansive empire, which began with hats for East Coast elite – including First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy – and went on to couture, ready-to-wear, fragrances, uniforms, accessories and housewares. He dressed the A-list for the Academy Awards and was a perennial figure in New York’s party scene. Never disconnected from his humble origins, Halston believed chic, sleek style should be as accessible to everyday women as it was to the society mavens that visited his couture salons.
