Hey There. I’m Max — an organizer for the Nurses’ Medicare for All campaign.
This past Monday, National Nurses United was proud to join devoted UAW members on the picket line in Memphis. And I wanted to take a moment to explain why this issue is so important, how it connects to our work to Win Medicare for All, and why we’re proud to join the UAW in solidarity in this fight.
But first, if you want to jump straight into the action, you can host a Medicare for All event near Washington by following this link. Otherwise, keep reading for more info about this crucial UAW strike, and how it relates to our movement for health care justice.
Here’s the backstory:
50,000 members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) have been on strike since September. One of the biggest issues they are fighting over is health care benefits — the costs of which General Motors (GM) continues to try and pass on to their workers, even though the company earned over $147 billion in 2018.
That’s appalling. And it’s a sobering reminder that we can’t rely on the generosity and benevolence of corporate CEOs. No matter how sky-high their profits are, they will always look for new ways to cut corners, slash costs, and exploit workers.
With Medicare for All, unions and GM workers would no longer need to negotiate for health care benefits. It would simply be guaranteed regardless of one’s employer. And that leaves unions with more bargaining power to use on better wages and all-around improved working conditions and worker protections.
There’s no two ways about it: Medicare for All is a win for workers and union members alike. And every day that passes, we get closer to achieving it.
I hope you’ll join us in this fight, and we’re so grateful for all that you do already.
In solidarity,
Max Cotterill
