Hi John,
We have a once in a decade opportunity for Fair Maps in Wisconsin. Join me this Wednesday, June 16 at 6 p.m. [[link removed]] as I host a virtual panel discussion about the impacts of gerrymandering on First Nations.
Native American communities across Wisconsin, including the Oneida Nation I belong to, have seen their communities gerrymandered. This has been done in an attempt to water down their voting power and lessen their political power. First Nations have deep roots in democracy. The deceitful tactic of gerrymandering is at odds with the longstanding democratic traditions of Indigenous peoples.
In 2018, 63 of 99 seats in the Wisconsin State Assembly were awarded to the party that received just 46 percent of the vote. This is because Wisconsin’s voting maps have been gerrymandered. Gerrymandered voting maps are drawn in a way that divide communities and favor a certain outcome. Black, Indigenous, and communities of color have historically been the ones most affected by this underhanded practice.
Join us this Wednesday, June 16 at 6 p.m. [[link removed]] for a virtual conversation with Indigenous and grassroots leaders about how gerrymandering affects Native American communities in Wisconsin and what can be done about it. You can register here [[link removed]].
What we choose to do now will impact our lives for the next decade. Wisconsin’s voting maps are currently being redrawn, and involvement from community members like you will decide Wisconsin’s future. So please join me for a night of inspiration and education.
