June 2021 WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM YOUR DAD? Father’s day is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the life lessons taught to us by our dad. You learned to be strong and independent if your dad was mostly absent in your life due to divorce or death. You learned tolerance and acceptance if there was a step-dad in your life. Growing up, your dad may have been the disciplinarian while providing for your family. Hopefully, your dad is still by your side providing you strength, courage and wisdom. A wolf dad is no different. The mated pair shares in the responsibility of raising their pups. The wolf dad sits at the top of the male hierarchy in the family. Misconstrued as combative and tense, both human and wolf fathers display behaviors that demonstrate empathy and understanding – in times of play and danger, an attentive presence of mind takes precedent. A wolf dad can crush bone with his powerful jaws yet gentle carry a young pup to safety. Paternal care of young wolves revolves around protection, nurturing, teaching, providing food for the mother and pups. A wolf dad will sacrifice his own life to defend his territory and protect his pack. The importance of dominant versus submissive behavior, crucial to the retention of the pack structure is one of the first lessons taught to his pups – a lesson necessary to survive in a hostile world. Happy Father’s Day to all Dads. WE CAN WIN BUT ONLY IF WE NEVER GIVE UP! The war on wolves rages on. You heard the grim news in states such as Wisconsin, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana; other states are not far behind. South Dakota says wolves are not welcome and can be killed as predators, dispersing wolves have been killed in Nebraska. Michigan lawmakers overturned two referendums whereby voters said no to wolf hunting. Several lawsuits have been filed to restore federal protections but as they weave their way through the courts, wolves are dying. A petition has been filed by a coalition of groups represented by Earthjustice asking the US Forest Service to issue new protections for wolves in designated wilderness areas following Idaho and Montana’s enactment of a rash of aggressive anti-wolf laws.
