Camila* came to Doorways after experiencing domestic violence. Although they had escaped the situation, they could not shake the feeling of being unsafe. As a person of color, a person with a disability, and a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, safe spaces could be hard to find.
At Doorways, however, Camila finally felt validated; their strengths were celebrated and they never felt judged or triggered. Doorways gave Camila a safe space to process the past and helped them to shift to a mindset of empowerment.
Camila was able to become more confident and feel safer with the help of tangible tools provided by Doorways' staff. They are able to connect with personal supports in healthy ways and build a more positive relationship with themself. Camila arrived at Doorways stuck in a state of survival. Today, they are able to feel grounded and safe in the here and now.
