John, California is home to some of the most skilled firefighters in the country. Every day, these brave men and women lay their lives on the line to protect our communities from dangerous wildfires. But instead of being compensated fairly for their work, many entry-level federal firefighters in California only make $13.45 an hour. When you crunch the numbers, that amounts to just $31,000 a year.
Lack of pay for our firefighters has left firecrews understaffed and overworked as we head into what is likely to be another intense fire season. This not only endangers firefighters on the job, but it puts our communities and our land at risk of devastation. The cost of living for California families has risen significantly over the past decade, and $13.45 an hour just doesn’t cut it. Federal firefighters deserve a raise.
