My team knows exactly how to beat the odds to make history -- our first race in 2018 was both the closest and the most expensive in New Jersey history. Then when we won last year, NJ-03 re-elected a Democrat for the first time in 160 years. I'm now one of only seven Democrats representing a district that voted for Trump last year -- and the only person of color.
Simply put, that means there's a target on my back. Already, corporate-backed super PACs and far-right hate groups are spending tons of dark money on misleading attack ads that are playing on the airwaves in NJ-03 right now. We fully expect that this is only the beginning of what's to come.
Midterms are often brutal on the party in power, too: the GOP knows their path to erasing our razor-thin majority in the House starts with beating me in NJ-03. So they're trying to soften the ground for any one of the three GOP challengers already lining up to take their shot at my seat.
Winning in 2018 and 2020 doesn't mean this seat will be safe in 2022 -- it just means my team and I are working even harder to connect with the kinds of voters we need in order to win. After all, that's how it should be. From the day when I was sworn in to represent NJ-03, I made it my priority to put people over politics and results over partisanship.
