John,
Five years ago on this day, one of the most horrific acts of mass violence in this country occurred: A shooter entered Pulse Nightclub, an LGBTQ dance club, during Pride Month, and killed 49 people.
This tragedy is a stark reminder that in this country, people are still at risk of death or harm because of who they love and how they identify. This club was primarily attended by LGBTQ people and members of the Latino community -- and it is heartbreaking to think of the families and friends of loved ones who lost their lives in what should have been a fun, joyous location.
Enough is enough. We cannot ever let a tragedy of this magnitude happen again. We need to stop discrimination and violence against LGBTQ people.
So on the anniversary of this awful event, I'm asking you to add your name alongside mine in calling on the Senate to pass the Equality Act. In honor of the 49 lives lost, in honor of their family members and friends who still grieve for their loved ones, and for every LGBTQ person in this country who deserves the same rights and protections as everyone else.

This event is also a stark reminder of the need for common sense gun safety legislation. The shooter had an assault rifle and was able to take the lives of so many people far too quickly.
This act of violence was the most deadly mass shooting in our country's history -- until the shooting at a concert in Las Vegas just over a year later.
Time and again, we are mourning gut-wrenching tragedies.
In Congress, I promise to prioritize passing common sense gun safety legislation. Background checks should not be controversial. Limits on ammunition should not be controversial. Keeping guns out of the hands of those who should not have them should not be controversial.
And ensuring that LGBTQ people have the same rights and protections as everyone else should not be controversial either.
On the anniversary of the Pulse tragedy, take a moment to sign my petition urging the Senate to pass the Equality Act.

Sending love and extra grace to those in the LGBTQ community who are simultaneously celebrating their love and identity this Pride month, while also grappling with tragic reminders of the difficulties and tragedies they have faced.
