H.R.1 might be at risk, but Dem AGs are prepared to act in our defense.
By now, you’ve probably already heard: The For the People Act (H.R. 1) is under threat. Democratic West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin has said he will vote against it.
But I want to be clear, team – this news from the Senate is just a speed bump, and we can’t give up on our democracy or the fight for national protections for voting rights. Republican-led state legislatures are introducing hundreds of voter suppression laws in 2021, and we desperately need a federal policy to defend everyone’s access to the ballot box, no matter where they live – especially as midterm elections draw close.
Democratic Attorneys General are fierce advocates of H.R. 1, urging Senate leadership to pass the legislation (while their Republican counterparts denounced it as “unconstitutional”). And as the People’s Lawyers, Dem AGs won’t be deterred by this latest news. Far from it.
H.R. 1 might be on thin ice in Congress, but Dem AGs are doubling down on voter protections regardless. Whether it’s filing legal action, working with local activists, or pressuring federal leaders to act, Dem AGs will use every tool they have to meet the needs of our communities.
When political systems don’t deliver on the protections that our democracy needs, you can count on Dem AGs to act swiftly on our behalf. In 2020 alone, Dem AGs filed and won three lawsuits to protect mail-in ballots, united to oppose Alabama’s ban on curbside voting, and much, much more.
