Welcome to another edition of FT Now! After another busy week in the news, let’s get down to business! First, far-left Representative Ilhan Omar made highly controversial remarks in a tweet comparing the United States and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban. Next up, red states are leading the country in economic growth after COVID-19. Lastly, check out The Surge to check out some of the stories you may have missed this week!

Ilhan Omar Lists United States as Bad Actor Alongside Taliban and Hamas

What Happened:
In a tweet, progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar included the United States and Israel on a list of countries and groups that have committed “unthinkable atrocities” - alongside Hamas militants and the Taliban.
Why You Should Care:
Rep. Omar was justifiably called out for comparing the U.S. and Israel, two free democratic countries, to the two deadly terrorist groups. NRCC spokesman Mike Berg: "Apparently, Ilhan Omar thinks America is as bad as the terrorists who brought down the Twin Towers."

What Happens Next:
Probably nothing. Rep. Omar has made controversial and even anti-semitic remarks before, so why would she change now?

Report: Some Red States’ Economies Already Stronger Than They Were Before COVID
What Happened:
Red states’ economies are bouncing back the fastest in the country after COVID-19, with South Dakota and Florida the top two states for growth.

Why You Should Care:
States that removed pandemic restrictions early or avoided strict lockdown measures altogether have bounced back much faster than states like California and New York. Gov. Kristi Noem never put a lockdown order in place in South Dakota and Gov. DeSantis rescinded Florida’s restrictions early on - and both states’ economies are outperforming their pre-pandemic strength.
What Happens Next:
With Republican governors continuing to foster businesses in their states and getting people back to work, economic growth will likely continue through the busy summer season.
