June 14th is National Flag Day, a day to remember America’s history and celebrate our freedom and democracy. This holiday was first proposed by a school teacher in 1885 and later recognized as a national holiday by President Truman in 1949. Throughout this week, we are encouraged to proudly hang an American flag as a sign of respect to our country.

Flags are also an important symbol of national pride as well as a tribute to those who protect the country. Unserviceable flags need to be disposed of property and respectfully.

The HRP is conducting a Statewide community service project from June 14th (Flag Day) to July 4th collecting unserviceable National and State flags for proper disposal. We are asking our County Chairs for their support in having their District and Precincts chairs to support this worthwhile statewide community service project. Listed below are contact names and numbers for more information on flag disposal.

GOALS of the Service Project:
* Raise awareness of unserviceable flags and provide service to the community via collection.
* Raise awareness on proper display of the US flag.
* Encourage Flag Display on Flag Day and other key Holidays.
* Strengthen HRP Coalitions with above organizations.

County and District chairs if you would please coordinate flag collection within your districts that would work best for your members or refer them to contact coordinators or collection points.

Mahalo for your assistance,
Jeffrey Coakley,
Vice Chair Community Service
