Below is an update on voting rights legislation and executive action in the state and federal level.
Today, Attorney General Merrick Garland committed to double the staff in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice within 30 days. Under the leadership of some of President Biden’s phenomenal nominees like Deputy AG Lisa Monaco, Associate AG Vanita Gupta, and Assistant AG Kristen Clarke, we expect the DOJ to actively protect voting rights.
While we have high expectations for the DOJ’s involvement in voting rights suits, AG Garland called on Congress to pass the For The People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. They will provide his lawyers with the necessary tools to protect voting rights.
On the topic of federal legislation, this week, Senator Manchin announced that he would vote against the For The People Act, effectively killing the bill as it stands in this Senate. We have always known that it would be incredibly hard for this bill to pass the Senate with the slimmest majority possible and a number of conservative Democrats, but now we know that expanding our majority in 2022 will be the necessary path to finally make this legislation a reality.
We are in desperate need of action at the federal level. While the news from the DOJ is very welcome, there is only one way to move forward. We need to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and expand our Senate majority so we can pass broader legislation.
Passing the John Lewis Act will not be an easy task. We will need to put up a fight like never before. So, John, can we count you in? Can you chip in $25 to join our fight?

In state legislation, a lot has also happened this week.
- In Iowa, Gov. Reynolds signed another voter suppression bill. This latest attack on civil rights will limit absentee voting sites and limit the ability of independent organizations to collect ballots, a very common practice in communities of color.
- In some good news, Nevada Governor Sisolak worked with Democratic legislators to make its state mail-in voting system permanent. Democrats in the state also implemented many more positive changes to make the state have one of the most accessible and safe voting systems in the country.
- An Atlanta Journal-Constitution found the state’s infamous voter suppression bill will have a disproportionate effect to suppress black voters.
- Even more violations were recorded in the Arizona fraudit.
- A bipartisan push for universal mail-in voting was signed into law in Vermont.
