Ohio Governor Mike DeWine Week in Review

Throughout the week, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted provided updates on Ohio's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as other state initiatives.
On *Saturday [ [link removed] ],?*Governor Mike DeWine announced that the Ohio Department of Health is reporting the two-week statewide average of cases per 100,000 residents is 49.5. These cases occured with onset dates in a two-week period from May 22 to June 4, 2021.
?Ohioans have shown our resilience and grit, and by continuing to get vaccinated we are coming through this pandemic stronger than ever,? said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. ?When I announced this goal on March 4th, I said that reaching 50 cases per 100,000 would mean we were entering a new phase of this pandemic. Vaccinations are working. That's why cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are down. But that doesn't mean we can let our foot off the gas. If you're not vaccinated against COVID-19, continue to wear a mask in public and Ohioans that are able to get vaccinated should.?
As of Saturday, more than 5.3 million Ohioans have started the vaccination process, making up 45.9% of all Ohioans. *More than 4.7 million people,?40.5% of Ohioans*?*are fully vaccinated*.

On *Monday,*?Governor Mike DeWine kicked off the Pathways to Community Plans of Safe Care event. This event focused on cross-agency collaboration aimed at addressing the safety, health, and substance use disorder treatment needs of infants and their affected family or caregivers.

On *Tuesday,?* [ [link removed] ]Governor Mike DeWine issued an urgent communication to vaccine providers asking them to distribute as many doses as possible to eligible Ohioans, as quickly as possible. Right now, the State of Ohio has?approximately *200,000* doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine set to expire on *June 23.*?
Governor DeWine also is appealing to Ohioans who have not been vaccinated yet: ?The time to act is now.?
?For Ohioans who have been waiting to get their vaccine, I urge you to take action now. There are many opportunities throughout the state to get a vaccine,? Governor DeWine said. ?The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is one of those options. It is safe and effective and only requires one shot. In just two weeks, you could be protected from this virus. Getting vaccinated is the quickest way out of the pandemic and the fastest way for us to return to the lives we remember.?
*Following an announcement by the Food and Drug Administration, the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine doses expiring June 23 will now expire 6 weeks later, allowing providers more time to vaccinate Ohioans.

On *Tuesday* morning, Governor DeWine attended the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce Legislative Day at the Athletic Club of Columbus. Governor DeWine specifically spoke about how Ohio is on the path to recovery after navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. The State of Ohio took many early action steps which have ensured that Ohio resident's remained as healthy as possible and endeavored to bolster our local economies despite unprecedented disruptions.?

Also on *Tuesday [ [link removed] ],* Governor Mike DeWine's RecoveryOhio Advisory Council held their quarterly council meeting virtually.?The council advises the RecoveryOhio [ [link removed] ] initiative aimed at improving the state's response to substance use and mental health disorders. The RecoveryOhio Advisory Council is made up of people with lived experiences, family members and experts from both the public and private sectors with experience in the fields of treatment, prevention, recovery support, and criminal justice.
Governor DeWine signed Senate Bill 30 during the RecoveryOhio Advisory Council's quarterly meeting. Senate Bill 30 [ [link removed] ], sponsored by Senator Matt Dolan, designates August 31st? as "Ohio Overdose Awareness Day".?
Additionally, Governor DeWine signed the following bills in private.?
Senate Bill 4 [ [link removed] ], sponsored by Senator Kristina Roegner, exempts personal information from public records requests for emergency service telecommunicators and certain Ohio National Guard members as individuals.?
Senate Bill 27 [ [link removed] ], sponsored by Senator Jay Hottinger, authorizes a state government employing authority to automatically enroll new employees in the deferred compensation program.?

Cleveland cliffs ribbon
Governor DeWine stands in front of the new Direct Reduction Plant in Toledo, Ohio at the Cleveland Cliffs ribbon cutting event.
On?*Wednesday*, Governor DeWine attended a ribbon cutting event for the new Cleveland Cliffs Direct Reduction Plant in Toledo. The plant produces hot briquetted iron in an environmentally friendly process for steel producers in the United States, and employs 160 Ohioans. In addition, the plant is located on a former oil refinery site that sat unused for more than 20 years. ?

Sara Afaneh and her mother, Summer Afaneh, from Sheffield Lake in Lorain County talk to Governor DeWine after Sara learned that she won a four-year full-ride college scholarship.
On *Thursday [ [link removed] ] *morning, Ohio Vax-A-Million's newest winners joined Governor DeWine to discuss why they chose to be vaccinated and their excitement of being selected during this week's drawing.?
Mark Cline from Richwood in Union County won this week's $1 million prize, and?Sara Afaneh from Sheffield Lake in Lorain County won this week's college scholarship prize.?
"This is really good, but I think, more importantly, it's about getting the vaccine," said Cline. "I hope everyone makes that decision to get it and looks after their friends and neighbors."
"We feel so lucky and so blessed that we won, but we?re so lucky that we were able to access the vaccine," said Summer Afaneh, who is Sara's mother and is also a nurse. "As soon as the kids were old enough to get vaccinated, we signed up, and it was a very easy, seamless event for us with minimal side effects, so that's really what we are grateful and thankful for."

*VACCINE UPTAKE*
Ohio continues to see increases in vaccine uptake across the state following the announcement of the Ohio Vax-A-Million?initiative that was launched last month to increase awareness of the availability and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines and provide incentives to Ohioans to get a COVID-19 vaccination.?
Ohio counties that have experienced an increase in vaccinations include Hocking, Seneca, Ross, Jackson, Fayette, Paulding, Wyandot, Crawford, Warren, and Pickaway counties.?
"Ohio continues to move forward into a new phase of the pandemic. Vaccinations are working. That's why cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are down. However, the threat of COVID-19 remains, and we must remain vigilant," said Governor DeWine. "If you're not vaccinated against COVID-19, please continue to wear a mask in public, and Ohioans who are able to get vaccinated should."

On *Thursday*, Lt. Governor Jon Husted visited Cleveland to help CrossCountry Mortgage celebrate the groundbreaking of their new headquarters in the city?s historic Superior Arts District. The project, which is expected to bring 600 full-time jobs to the area, received various state incentives, including an Ohio Opportunity Zone Tax Credit and the Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit and was made possible through support from ?JobsOhio, the Ohio Development Services Agency, the City of Cleveland, and Team NEO.
