John,
You might have heard: two Ukrainian-Americans were just arrested on campaign finance violations.
These arrests are a direct result of Campaign Legal Center’s work. Be a part of protecting the democratic process. Please contribute to support us. ([link removed])
Last year, we uncovered how those same two men laundered a six-figure contribution ([link removed]) to President Trump’s super PAC through a shell corporation.
We filed a complaint on this with the Federal Election Commission, ([link removed]) and today, the pair was arrested by federal agents. The indictment describes how the two Ukrainian-Americans laundered political contributions, including hidden foreign funds, “to advance their personal financial interests and the political interests of at least one Ukrainian government official with whom they were working.” The Ukrainian pair leveraged their access – which they secretly bought – to promote the same theories about former Vice President Joe Biden's family that Trump adopted in his phone call with Ukraine’s leader. They worked with Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, to dump the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, and push the country to investigate one of Trump's political opponents.
The Department of Justice indictment states that some of those efforts “were conducted, at least in part, at the request of one or more Ukrainian government officials.”
CLC’s work has now become central to the impeachment inquiry.
The indictment charges the two men with lying to the FEC in response to the complaint we filed, and hiding the sources of the money given to the Trump super PAC.
Campaign Legal Center is a nonpartisan organization. We call out violations of election law no matter the political party of the violator. We cannot allow foreign governments and money to intervene in American politics. Without free and fair elections, our democracy will cease to exist.
CLC’s mission is to protect and strengthen the democratic process. Central to this mission is ensuring that government officials are held accountable. We follow the money and influence. We have fought secret money in U.S. elections for years, and this case vividly demonstrates why our work on this issue is so important.
Campaign Legal Center can only fulfill our critical role as democracy’s watchdog with the help of generous people like you. At this most important moment in our country’s history, please consider making a gift to support our continued work. ([link removed])
As Congress proceeds with their investigation, and as more facts come out daily, our attorneys and researchers will continue to keep you informed.
Thank you for your support.
Trevor Potter
President, Campaign Legal Center
