Happy Pride Month, John!
Pride is a big deal here in Oregon. Some of this year's events, like the June 20 Pride Parade, which I love, will be virtual. So I want to share some memories from years past to add to this year's celebration.
With Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici and Labor Commissioner Val Hoyle at the Pride Parade a few years ago.
I was so excited about the honor of getting to ride in this beautifully decorated van.
Of course, Pride isn’t just about rainbow flags and parades. It’s about taking action to achieve long-overdue equality.
So, speaking of Pride, I am incredibly proud to be the Attorney General of a state that has made real progress on issues affecting the LGBTQ Community. I am also proud to have played a role in achieving marriage equality here in Oregon in 2014.
We have continued to move forward since then, and I will not stop as long as discrimination exists.
In 2019, I spearheaded a statewide Hate Crimes Task Force that resulted in legislation clarifying that gender identity is a protected class in Oregon. That was followed by HB 3041, that I requested this session and that adds gender identity protections throughout our statutes-- and which is heading to the Governor's desk for signature!
Last month a law was passed that bars defendants in criminal cases from using the “shock” of their victims' identities as a defense to their crimes. And just this week, we held the first of our online " Community Conversations" with members of communities impacted by inequity. Our first session focused on the LGBTQ community, particularly ways we can improve services for crime victims and survivors.
With your help, I will continue to fight alongside the LGBTQ+ community against discrimination. Please donate today to help me continue my mission to achieve equality across Oregon and the whole country. PITCH IN NOW >>
