As we celebrate Pride Month, I’m reminded that in 29 states, there are still no laws that protect LGBTQ+ Americans from discrimination. The Equality Act would change this -- and it passed the House two years ago with a bipartisan vote. But it never made it to the Senate -- because Mitch McConnell buried it. 

Now, I look forward to asking President Biden for his signature on landmark legislation to protect LGBTQ+ Americans from discrimination in every state. Will you join me in calling on the Senate to pass the Equality Act?

It was just six years ago this month that LGBTQ+ Americans like my daughter won the legal right to marry who they love. 

The happy life that she and her wife, my daughter-in-law, share, is possible because of relentless activism and public support. The Equality Act is the next step we need to take to ensure that LGBTQ+ Americans can live with security, dignity, and pride, with protections against discrimination in every single state. 

When the Equality Act first passed the House, my predecessor Mitch McConnell buried it. It went to a place we called his legislative graveyard -- common sense, bipartisan bills from the House that he prevented from reaching the Senate for votes. 

I have the power to undo this damaging inaction, but passing this bill into law will require support from folks like you. Mitch McConnell hasn’t gone anywhere, and I know he won’t think twice about obstructing the Equality Act again. He’s done it before.
